Sadly, we have lost another native Termitani. Sam Sansone was the husband
of my second cousin, Alice Mascari. He was the son of Andrea Sansone (b.
June 3, 1896 in Termini, d. Mar 29, 1983 in Termini) and Maria Grazia
Papania. (b. in Termini, d. Dec 1974 in Termini) As noted in the obituary,
he was born in Termini and his surviving siblings all continue to live in
Termini. His brother, Giuseppe, lives literally around the corner from the
Grand Hotel in Termini (on via Tinta, for those of you who have Termini
maps) and I visited Giuseppe and his wife, Enza, when our group visited
Termini in 2006

Salvatore Sansone "Sam" Salvatore "Sam" Sansone January 10, 2010 Salvatore
"Sam" "Toto" Sansone, 88, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 10, at his
home in Syracuse following a brief illness, with his family by his side.
Born in Termini Imerese, Sicily, he served in the Italian Army and was held
as a prisoner of war by Germany until being liberated by the Americans at
the end of WWII. Sam immigrated to the United States in 1954, following his
marriage to Alice Mascari Sansone. He retired from construction work in
1983, maintaining loyal affiliation with the Laborers International Union of
North America, Local 633, for more than 50 years. At one time, he owned and
operated Anna's Coffee Shop, located at 933 South Geddes Street. Sam was a
master gardener, growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables, including 300
tomato plants each year. No one ever left his home without seedlings to
start their own gardens and bushels of fresh produce. Sam greatly enjoyed
cooking and making his own wine, tomato sauce and cherry preserves. No
celebration was complete without his homemade pizzas, sausages, spaghetti,
pasta fagioli, panelle and sfingi. Sam adored his cats and dog, who
faithfully accompanied him back and forth to his garden. He could build and
repair anything, albeit frequently in a highly unorthodox manner, and
enjoyed fishing. After 57 years of marriage, he remained deeply, madly in
love with his wife, Alice, who likewise loved him with all her heart. Sam
was predeceased by two sisters, Rosa and Maria Sansone. He is survived by
his loving wife, Alice; daughter, Marie Grace Sansone of Washington, DC; two
sisters, Fana Sansone of Italy and Francesca Sansone (Salvatore Polito) of
Italy; two brothers, Fano (Sylvana) and Giuseppe (Enza) Sansone, both of
Italy; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 9:15 a.m. from PIRRO & SONS
FUNERAL HOME and 10 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, where a Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may
call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 1500 Park Street.
