I guess I fit right in since I made spaghetti yesterday because my
grandchildren love it. We also had pork and sauerkraut yesterday (left over
from New Year's Eve. The grandchildren are from my first marriage. my
father-in-law says they had spaghetti with every meal. Stretched the
dollars with a large family.

As far back as I could remember my family has had pork and sauerkraut for
New Years. I didn't mention sauerkraut because I don't care for it. My
grandmother use to have it too on mom's side. Dad's side did it also. The
grandparents came over in the early 1900's. Oh yes spaghetti too.
Spaghetti was for every holiday. Siblings use to say ma can't we have
turkey like all the American kids do on Thanksgiving?

We had pork and sauerkraut today. My family always had pork and sauerkraut
on New Year's Day for good luck. I was telling a first generation Italian
friend about this last night and she said it sounded German and never heard
of Italians doing this. Any insight on this New Year's tradition? Is it
Italian?

As I know about the 7 fishes, it is for Christmas. Our family did some kind
of pork for good luck in the new year on new years day.

What 7 fishes?

I have asked my father-in-law a couple of times how his parents came from a
small fishing village and yet his kids (my husband included) don't ike
seafood.
now my husband can't eat any meat that doesn't swim or fly.
