That was picked up by the large community of Slav, German and other
nationalities.
The Italians cooked it because of learning from them. My family cooked
pork and
sauerkraut for New Years. But that is not an Italian tradition. We had
an Italian and
when he tasted sauerkraut he hated it.

We had pork and sauerkraut today. My family always had pork and
sauerkraut on New Year's Day for good luck. I was telling a first
generation Italian friend about this last night and she said it sounded
German and never heard of Italians doing this. Any insight on this New
Year's tradition? Is it Italian?

As I know about the 7 fishes, it is for Christmas. Our family did some
kind
of pork for good luck in the new year on new years day.

What 7 fishes?
I have asked my father-in-law a couple of times how his parents came
from a
small fishing village and yet his kids (my husband included) don't ike
seafood.
now my husband can't eat any meat that doesn't swim or fly.
