not all of them have the same reference number. I have found several
that are very distinctly different and also some that do not have a
number at all on the cover page

I have a feeling that sometimes the original records may have become detached and separated from the original book, with the loose pages just shoved in a book in random order, and that is why they sometimes do not follow in date sequence on the microfilm; they got filmed however they were placed in the book. Just a guess, obviously, but it seems logical.
