Paul=2C Laura and Joe (and all who face the same)=2C
You are not alone. I'm going through the same thing with my parents. We jus=
t moved them to a higher level of care after over a year of practically beg=
ging. Mom is wheelchair bound with a progressive neurological disorder and=
needs full nursing care=2C but Dad insisted he could take care of her desp=
ite his ongoing heart problems (he's 88). We moved them two weeks ago (whic=
h is why I couldn't join you all in Denver) and it has been a huge relief k=
nowing they have nurses checking on them regularly. The place they're in ha=
s dual levels of care for couples=2C so Mom gets nursing home type care and=
Dad gets assisted living=2C but they can stay together in their apartment.=
=20
=20
They seem to be settling in to care okay=2C now. But they are sad that it h=
as come to this. They never had to deal with this with their parents (who d=
ied in their 50s and 60s more suddenly of heart attacks). Dad misses his in=
dependence and we miss communicating with Mom.=20
=20
Poor Mom is trapped inside her failing body=2C but still has a glimmer of h=
umor that she tries to get out through her whispered speech. She still trie=
s to make our Sicilian cookies and biscotti with us=2C even though her hand=
s can't quite work the dough anymore. But it is wonderful to see her face l=
ight up as she has her daughters and grandchildren around her in the kitche=
n.=20
