This isn't quite true. The manifests were filled out BEFORE the ships 
departed for the US.  Officials at Ellis Island did not change the 
names.  Name changes were more often made AFTER the left Ellis Island as 
the immigrants tried to assimilate into their new surroundings.

Do not forget to mention that when immigrants came to Ellis Island, 
sometimes their names were changed by the immigration officials; for 
example, my aunt Concetta was rechristened Mary and my aunt Antonina was 
called Lena; my mother got to keep her given name Philippa.  Joanne 
Bufalini Alaica  (my mother's name was Ragona)
