An addtional thought about names.
Since the Italian naming tradition meant that the first born son was named
after the paternal grandfather of the child, it was common for cousins to
have the same first name. Hence my mother had seven (count them seven)
cousins named Anthony Pusateri. Therefore you will find that many immigrants
chose another name first name when coming to America, or were known by nick
names.
Also, some of our ancestors wanted more American sounding names and
therefore chose one that might not have been a direct translation. So my
mother's uncle Salvatore became Sylvester. Others Sals might have remained
Sal or became Sam. I have found an instance where Innocenzo became Vincent,
since Innocenzo, somewhat common in Sicily was rare in America.
