I downloaded Explorer 8, the new version a few weeks ago. Maybe that is a
problem.

I have stopped allowing the windows xp updates since my last hard drive
crash. I think something is wrong with the updates because there were a lot
of them taking place just before the disk crashed. Haven't had a problem
since I reloaded windows this time.
did you recently do an xp update?
I was getting errors on ftm also. None since. However, something still has
word broken (can't print word documents).

Corie and all cousins, this may not be the same problem you are having but I
have been getting " this file is damaged" and FTM cannot open it but will
open a backup file, but only in the last two weeks, never before. Seems
strange that it would be a coincidence. After that message, the file
sometimes opens anyway and sometimes the backup file opens. Hope you have
solved your problem by now and have your files back.

Subject: [TI] FTM damaged file
Any of you experienced Family Tree Maker users have advice for me? I was
working with my family file last night merging a duplicate individual and
got a "this file is damaged" message. I went to open the FBK backup and that
gave me the same message. The file still shows 71MB, but I can't figure out
how to fix the damage to get at the data. All the FTM tips on damaged files
don't work because I can't open it at all to compress it or reindex or
export to GEDCOM. Ack!
Unfortunately, this was a really bad time to find out that my automatic
internet Carbonite backup system did not back up any files in program
folders like FTM, even though it said it backs up the whole hard drive!!!!
(So if you have one of those, be sure to check what it is backing up!!!)
I'm so bummed. I have a CD back up from last summer, but I had added 800
names since then!!! Any advice on damaged file recovery would be
appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Corie
