I want to take exception to the linking people here. I use 2009 and I am
able to link a parent and child that was not previously linked without
creating a new child and then merging. There is a detach and attach feature
which will let you attach a spouse or child or detach, as the case may be.
I use this a lot in my family.

3. MERGING & LINKING PEOPLE.
This feature takes the complexity out of trying to merge
individuals. Gives you more options and easier choices for choosing data
that you want to keep. Linking is even greater tool. For example. In
FTM, if you had a person in your file and you also had his parents in
the file BUT he was not showing as a child of his parents, you needed to
create a child with the same name and then merge the two together. With
Legacy, you click in the next available place to enter a child and
choose to LINK to an existing son or daughter and the child is
immediately attached to that set of parents. So much simpler
