The TI file has almost 47,000 people in it now
Over the years I have tested at least 25 or 30 different genealogy
programs. I always went back to FTM because it contained the most
features of any of them I tried. It also was the user-friendliest
program around. Great charts, easy data input, etc.
But when FTM decided to rewrite their program from scratch and rename to
FTM 2008, then 2009, they tested my patience to the limit. I beta
tested FTM 2008.........the TI file which only had about 30,000 entries
at that time was too LARGE for it to work in the program. It took 3 to 4
minutes to move between screens, took forever to do any task, took
forever for the index to load, etc. The format was no longer user
friendly. I continued using FTM 16 and kept hoping that each update
would speed up the program. With FTM 2009, it sped up a bit but it
still takes more than a minutes to move between screens and is no more
user friendly than it started out to be. I find it impossible to work
with. I don't like the setup and userface although there are those who
love the new FTM format.
So I continued to use FTM 16 as my program until about 4 months ago. I
started experimenting with all of the programs again to see which gave
me the most features. I had liked Legacy before but it lacked a lot of
the features of FTM. NOW it has far surpassed even FTM 16.
I think there are 3 EXCEPTIONAL features in Legacy besides speed that
really swayed my switch to it:
1. THE INDEX. You actually have couple of different kinds of indexes
in Legacy
a. NAME LIST is a split screen with the list of names on the left
and a window on the left with many viewable options on tabs. Those tab
options include seeing all the names of the person's parents and
siblings and children, a small pedigree chart showing the person, his
parents and grandparents. Another tab shows the notes and another tab
shows the sources.
b. MARRIAGE LIST - You can see all of the marriages in your file in
ONE PLACE. If a person was married more than one, there will be an
entry for each marriage. BUT.......another feature of this list is that
you can sort it by HUSBAND or by WIFE so you can find a person much easier.
2. SOURCING - This is a very big item to me. Legacy has a nifty little
feature that allows you to assign a Surety Level to the
source............how sure are you that the document is correct? Also,
it also allows you to record the date you entered the source and you can
give it a file ID (which others told me they use as a filing system for
the actual document location........Binder, folder, shelf, etc. or
however you file your documents.
3. MERGING & LINKING PEOPLE.
This feature takes the complexity out of trying to merge
individuals. Gives you more options and easier choices for choosing data
that you want to keep. Linking is even greater tool. For example. In
FTM, if you had a person in your file and you also had his parents in
the file BUT he was not showing as a child of his parents, you needed to
create a child with the same name and then merge the two together. With
Legacy, you click in the next available place to enter a child and
choose to LINK to an existing son or daughter and the child is
immediately attached to that set of parents. So much simpler
