Subject: [TI] Mormon access to Catholic, and other religions, records
Dear Group,
I am a Roman Catholic....been all my life. Darn proud of it.
I was baptized once...and I don't mind of someone were to think so much of
me and my soul that they baptized me again. My soul was cleansed once...it
can't hurt a second time around. I welcome the spiritual help. My own
father had the Last Rites given to him about 5 times within the 3 months
before he passed away. One priest told me that he would not give the Last
Rites to Dad because he had them before. We, the family, backed him up
against the wall and said, "If Dad is asking for them again, then you had
better give it to him...understand, Father?" The priest suddenly saw things
our way and abided by Dad's wishes. No problem. What's the big deal with
getting blessed all over again? I see no harm in it. There are no bolts of
lightening striking out of the sky. And as far as I know, Dad made it to
heaven just fine.
Secondly, what parish registrar ever leaves original record books laying
wide open to visitors? I have never seen that. There has always been
someone watching very closely, and if a copy is requested, you can get
one.... really. Sometimes all you have to do is e-mail the archdiocese of
the area in which you are looking, and they will search their records for
you for a particular person/date/event. I have had not problem with that.
If they can't find a person, they tell you. If you want a copy, tell them
why and pay the requested fee. If you are lucky enough to find a record in
the microfilms from the LDS, hooray. Make a copy and be happy with it.
Don't worry about what those "Mormons" are going to do with it. They keep
in in a vault in the mountain and make copies of it for those who pay a fee
to view it. Most information about "living persons" is protected to a
certain degree in each state and country. I worry more about my credit card
number than I do my deceased relat
ive's vital records.
On the subject of closely related persons being married....if we ever sought
to banish any marriage of two persons closely related, then half of my
relatives and most of my ancestors would be "separated" and my family would
be a bigger mess than it already is! If they did not marry their first
cousin, then they married their second cousin, or first cousin once removed,
or their second cousin once removed. Sometimes the ladies never had to
change their names!!!!! How convenient it that? And I don't think that we
have anyone mentally challenged because of their parents being somehow
genetically related....well, at least in MY opinion none of them show signs
of that!
I volunteer for the FHC in Naperville, Illinois. I am one of their token
Italian Catholic volunteers. I have never known anyone from that church
who has ever spoken about persons using the genealogical information that
they have been able to film, and use it in any way, form or fashion that
would not be beneficial to persons around the world.
And getting blessed a second or third time around is not harmful to anyone.
Some of us need all the help we can get. I can name quite a few in my own
family who could use some of those extra blessings right now, Who cares who
initiates the prayers....we all pray to the same Lord. He made all of us.
Even those who could stand a few extra blessings.
As one of my favorite quotes goes, "Can't we all just learn to get along?"
Sincerely,
Sharon Bognar Reif
the tearful, yet cheerful mother of the bride.....
ps please feel free to bless me anytime
