[TI] Ambridge Spagnolo's

Dear Joe,

I've been following the Spagnolo stream with interest. I was the
person who did the newspaper (Daily Citizen) searches for you last
year. I live in Ambridge and knew the Spagnolo family. We were
customers at their outdoor food stand. I can still smell the
roasting peanuts on a cold winter day. They also sold Christmas
trees and we almost always ended up getting one(or two) on Christmas
Eve for 50 cents.

The 1910 census does list an extended family member as Joe (age 52).
This was probably Joe Jr.'s father. Their address was 533 Merchant
Street next to what was the Prince Theater (gone now). There were
two other open-air markets, Giuta's and Romano's Each of the three
had their unique way of selling and a great variety of personalities.
It was always a great adventure going there with my grandmother
Christina Badamo DiNovo. She spoke Italian to them always and as a
little kid, I was fascinated not only by what they were saying but
also by the animation that took place.

At one time you could walk down Merchant Street and hear Italian,
Greek, Slovak, Polish, and other languages being used by the men as
the women shopped. Gone but never forgotten.

If you are ever in the area you are welcome at my house.

Sincerely,

John A. Mihaloew
