Most states will not issue a death certificate if the death occurred after
1957 due to the 50 year privacy policy that many states follow, unless you
are a direct descendant. It is that way here in New York State. I have
not had a problem with death certificates before 1957, but I haven't ordered
any from Rhode Island. Marriage certificates also usually follow the 50
year privacy policy and most birth certificates follow a 75 year privacy
policy. If there is any chance that you can find out when they were
married, you might want to try to get their marriage license instead and
this will give you the info you want - I've done that several times to get
around the death certificate policy.
