As some of you are aware, I have a brick wall I've been trying to break
down involving my great-grandfather, Nunzio Maddi. He was born about
1845, probably in Mezzojuso, but not necessarily there. The best I can
find from the LDS records is that he was abandoned as an infant, which
backs up a story all the Maddi cousins heard as children.
So almost 3 years ago I tested my DNA at Family Tree DNA and put my
results in a number of public databases, hoping to find a close match,
but also realizing I might not get one for years, if at all. About two
months ago, I received an e-mail from someone in the Ancestry.com DNA
database who matched me on 42 of 43 markers. You can read about what
this means in a posting I did at
http://forums.familytreedna.com/showthread.php?tW13
The bottom line is that now, after upgrading to 48 common markers with
46 matching, there is almost no doubt that my match and I share a common
paternal line ancestor. The common ancestor, based on the similarity of
results, lived anywhere from 4 to 11 generations ago, but probably
closer to four. My match's grandfather came from a small town in
Calabria, about 200 miles from Mezzojuso. The original name in Italy was
Vallelonga. There are no phone listings for Vallelonga in Sicily today.
But there are many for Vallelunga in Trabia and a few in Termini Imerese.
Now someone has brought to my attention that www.familysearch.org has
people named Vallelonga being born in Termini Imerese in the early
1800s. I know that the information genealogists put on familysearch.org
is not always entirely accurate. So my question is:
Does anyone recall seeing the surname Vallelonga in the microfilmed
records for the early 1800s in Termini Imerese?
