I can't resist this.  Of course, if one is really adventurous, stay
roughly 30 miles southwest of Termini in the town of  Corleone -- the
forebear of the "Godfather."  Maybe, you will run into Al Pacino's
distant cousins!!

There are some great places in Porticello right next door to Termini. We
spent a month there last year and going back for another month this
year.

I've stayed in Palermo and Campofelice di Roccella and Cefalu, all were
less expensive than Termini but only Cefalu was just as nice (tourist
place out-of-season). A good place to look for lodging is www.enit.it
and
http://www.bed-and-breakfast-in-italy.com/bed_and_breakfast_palermo.cfm
and www.palermotourism.com. Hard to get a good deal during the Summer.
