I received the following email from a cousin.  I have
never heard of this movie.  Was wondering if anyone
else has seen it and what they thought of it.

I finally got to see this movie.

And, I highly recommend it to you.

The opening scenes are filmed in and around Petralia
in the Madonie mountains of Sicily .

The main character Salvatore Mancuso comes from
Petralia Sottana and the actor Vincenzo Amato, who was
born near Palermo , spend a month living in the
Madonie Mountains to learn the customs, language, and
practices of these people to bring his character to
life.

The movie takes place in Sicily at around 1904, the
voyage across the Atlantic and ends at Ellis Island.

It is, as close to what my grandparents and their
children must have experienced when they came to
America.

At the dawn of the 20th century, Sicilian widower
Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) leaves behind
everything he knows to pursue a better life in America
in this elegiac immigrant's tale. With his sons in
tow, Salvatore survives the harrowing Atlantic
crossing only to suffer more hardship and humiliation
on Ellis Island . But along the way, he finds romance
with a mysterious Englishwoman (Charlotte Gainsbourg)
who's also made the arduous voyage.
