I have not been to Termini during Carnavale but I had heard it was a
big deal and that people come from all over for it.
I was there the week before Palm Sunday and the preparation for
Easter was pretty impressive. The easter treats and foods were being
marketed that early. Also, many of the coastal resorts use the Easter
holiday as their official opening for the year. Prior to that many of
them are shut down completely or very limited facilities and
amenitities. San Vito lo Capo in Trapani was a virtual ghost
town...only people cleaning up to ready for the tourists coming in a
week or so.
I did take the train overnight from Rome to Sicily. We got off for a
day near Messina and got back on the next day to go to Palermo. In
all, if we had gone straight through it would have been a ten to
twelve hour ride (we had a long stop in Naples and Messina). The
train itself is loaded onto the ferry and that takes a while).
It was not the most comfortable night on my trip-very bright at times
and a little noisy-but it was very interesting.
