Ciao,

Has anyone been to TI or other parts of Sicily during the pre-Lenten carnival? Others on this list may also receive the emails from the Mailing List of
Sicilia.indettaglio.it (they send an email once I month, I think, with little profiles of places in Sicily and sometimes upcoming events, and they have tourism ads); the email I just received was all about Carnavale and included the following:

Termini Imerese - Pa

In Termini Imerese during the week of Carnival one can admire the parade of the allegorical wagons representing famous politicians or show business people. People dance, and at the end pf Carnival two puppets, named the "Nannu" and the "Nanna" are burned on the public square, so marking the end of Carnival feast. There's a poster for the TI carnavale at the website (scroll down):

I'm curious about what it's like (e.g., are there all-day events? Is it a huge event for the city relative to Mardi Gras in New Orleans? (although on a smaller scale in TI, I'm sure), etc.)

I recently returned from a week-long conference in the northern city of Reggio Emilia, not far from Bologna. Even though I was in northern Italy, Termini Imerese was still on my mind. On our one free day some of us took the train to Firenze, and I noticed on the train schedule that a train goes through Reggio Emilia that ends up in Palermo (many many hours later) and the next-to-last stop is Termini Imerese. In Reggio Emilia (a city of about 160,000) I happened upon a bakery cafe that advertised "Sicilian Cannoli" in the window. They also had other favorites including arancini and Sicilian-style pizza. I chatted with the very friendly owners in my broken Italian. The wife was from Gela and the husband from Caltanisetta, and the food was delicious, a taste of Sicily in northern Italia.

The trip was a good chance to relearn my basic knowledge Italian and hopefully that will make it easier for me as I get back into my family tree research and hopefully return for future visits :-)

Best wishes,

Lucia
