[TI] Cemeteries in Sicily...

When a family no longer pays the rent on the grave, the grave is 
recycled and rented to another family or person.  The bones that are 
removed are buried in the ossuary or in the center of each section.  If 
you look at the pictures, you will see that each section of the cemetery 
is a square with the tombstones/graves going around the outside edge 
only.  In the center of those squares are graves of the recycled. 

I don't remember who it was when we were there in a group in 2006, but 
someone took pictures of the bones being removed from a grave and carted 
in bins away.  The pictures were pretty graphic
