Monte Grappa (near Primolano, Belluno Province, Veneto Region)

I have been to Monte Grappa (near Primolano, Belluno). It was the scene of an incredible battle in WWI between the Italian and the Austrian/Hungarian forces. Approximately 40,000 were killed there and in surrounding areas.
The mountain is at an altitude of approximately 1900M. The mountain is now a monument with the graves of Italians on one side of the monument and Austro Hungarians on the other. There is a small chapel, a museum and tunnels which are accessible. The entire country side was grazing land before WWI. The ground is still barren from all the artillery that was fired. The dugouts can be seen from the top. They look like paths zigzagging along the mountain side.

The view is incredible. You are surrounded by mountains. Some covered in snow, some grass and trees and some totally barren.

My Grandfather fought at Monte Valderoa (about 4km from Monte Grappa) as a machine gunner. He survived WWI but was killed 25th April 1945 in WWII along with three others as retaliation for the death of a German soldier by resistance fighters.
